What is surprising is when Jonah went to Ninevah, they repented. The question before the nation of Israel is what would they do with God’s message? Judah had left God to worship Baal. Jeremiahs job was to remind Israel that she was chosen by God. If they repented God would save them. Jeremiah began to speak to the people of Judah. But he was ridiculed for being so young. The older false prophets declared to the people. How can he know so much about what God wanted. They rejected his message, and tried to kill him. Jeremiah was put in a deep well, beat . He was told to stop preaching his message. Judah had become addicted to Baal worship that they would go beyond their means to seek Baal’s favor. This was something they had not done when they still worshipped God. Now some people actually listen to the message and obeyed. God’s message was very simple. All Judah had to do was surrender. Those who surrender would be taken away into captivity and be safe. The people of Israel’s day who stayed inside the wall and fought the battle. They were all killed. Those who had gone into captivity, they all lived and raised up children and grandchildren and so on. It was years later that Israel returned to Jerusalem and restore the city. Sometimes it takes captivity to make a person realize that godliness is an affirmation of truth. I wonder how many people being led away turn and looked, only to say Jeremiah was right all along? I challenge you to study Jeremiah and the book of Lamentations and feel the pain and sorrow that Jeremiah had for his people. Sometimes I wonder if we take the New Testament to lightly when it comes to salvation. I wonder how many people on judgment day are going to say those Christians were right? They are going into captivity for eternity. There will be no salvation for those who have rejected God and his message.
