What was the practice of the early Christians concerning the Lords Supper? Immediately after the church was started on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two in verse forty two there are four things that the church did when it meet. “They devoted themselves to ‘the apostles doctrine, Fellowship, Breaking of Bread (Lords Supper), and Prayer.” They saw these as an essential part of their Christian worship service. The next question would then have to be asked; When did the Church come together for a service? Acts 20:7 gives a indication that Paul and the others meet on the first day of the week to break bread and listen to preaching. So what was the first day of the week for this church? The Jews did not have specific names for each day (exceptions: Day of Preparation, 6th day, Sabbath, 7th day). Since the church was located in gentile territory they would have been conducting the service on Roman time table. From that evidence we can conclude that the first day of the week was Sunday. According to 1st Corinthians 16:1 the offering was taken up on the first day of the week. I find no Church making an argument over the collection.
